Study on Paul’s
“Thorn In The Flesh”

This Blog Is going to be a study on “Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh” in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 King James Bible:

But before 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 King James Bible is read, let’s read 2 Corinthians 12:1-6 KJV, talking about Paul’s Visions and Revelations, Leading up to 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJV, and even Verses 10 through 12, with more INFIRMITIES and other ISSUES that Paul went through:

2 Corinthians 12:1-6 KJB:

1It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.

3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)

4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.

6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.

Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh:

When Paul talks about his “Thorn In The Flesh” in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJB: ““And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a Thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure (2 Corinthians 12:7 KJV),

“For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.”
(2 Corinthians 12:8 KJV).

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore will I gladly glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV).

2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJV:

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Corinthians 12:10-12 KJV: MORE INFIRMITIES FOR PAUL:

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

11 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.

12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

*** WITH REFERENCE TO PAUL AND JOB, BOTH HAD SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS AND PRIDE. THAT’S WHY GOD (EVEN THOUGH HE DIDN’T CAUSE IT), BUT GOD ALLOWED IT, TO LET PAUL HAVE THE THORN IN THE FLESH, SO THAT PAUL’S PRIDE AND SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS WOULD HAVE DESTROYED HIM, IF HE HADN’T BEEN HUMBLED BY THIS THORN IN THE FLESH!

2 CORINTHIANS 12:7 KJB – ABOVE MEASURE: MEANINGS FROM THE COMPACT EDITION OF THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY - PAGE 1755:

A messenger of Satan was sent to bring Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh to torment him. Yet at the same time his Thorn In The Flesh was given so that he wouldn’t become conceited, proud, boastful, etc. This could be compared to the story of Job. Satan had permission to afflict Job, God’s servant, yet only within the Guidelines set by God (Job 2:1-6 KJV):

1Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord.

2 And the Lord said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

3 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

4 And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.

5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

6 And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

In Verse 2 above, when The LORD is talking to Satan, and The LORD says to Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it, Satan was actually going to and fro ON THE EARTH, and NOT INSIDE THE EARTH; and Satan was also ACTUALLY WALKING UP AND DOWN ON THE EARTH, NOT INSIDE OF IT.

The Apostle Paul also wrote in 1 Corinthians 5:5 King James Version about handing over an immoral brother to Satan so that his flesh may be destroyed but his spirit saved on the day of the Lord (the 7-year Great Tribulation).

1 Corinthians 5:5 KJV:

“5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Sometimes Satan (that old slewfoot The Devil) is used as an instrument to test, oppress, or buffet believers IN and ON Jesus Christ of Nazareth, to strengthen their faith or prove the righteousness of these believers.

After Paul explains his visions and revelations to the Corinthians
(2 Corinthians 12:1-6 KJV), he tells the Corinthians that the Thorn In The Flesh was given to him for the benefit and purpose of keeping him from becoming conceited, proud, boastful, etc., which otherwise may have given Paul a reason to be conceited, proud, boastful, etc.

Many theories have been put forth as to what Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh was. In fact, so many theories have been put forth for this Thorn that it’s impossible to make a diagnosis of Paul’s situation to have complete assurance as to what it was. One suggestion is that Paul’s thorn came as a result of Jewish persecution because of the context of opponents. Even in Numbers 33:55 thorns are used as a metaphor for the enemies of the Israelites. Metaphor means this: “a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable:"her poetry depends on suggestion and metaphor"

a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract:"the amounts of money being lost by the company were enough to make it a metaphor for an industry that was teetering"

Numbers 33:55 KJV

55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

Pricks in Numbers 33:55 KJV means: Various pointed objects as thorns, goads, etc.

Vex in Numbers 33:55 KJV means: trouble, disturb, distress, afflict

Another suggestion is that Paul’s own remembrance of his past was the Thorn he had. Part of Paul’s past included his persecution of the church (Acts 8:1-3; Galatians 1:13; Philippians 3:6, All KJV). This may have haunted him continually and kept him humble, not conceited, proud, boastful, etc. There are some that even say that Paul dealt with either carnal temptation or depression. It is the author of this Blog Prophecy Alert Today opinion that this is not the case, because Paul was so strong in the LORD Jesus Christ that carnal temptation or depression wasn’t the reason at all for his Thorn In The Flesh.

Acts 8:1-3 KJB:

1 And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles.

2 And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

Lamentation in Acts 8:2 means: wailing, weeping

Havock in Acts 8:3 means: great destruction

Haling in Acts 8:3 means: drawing, hauling, pulling with force/violence

Rather than Paul having carnal temptation or depression, it was much more likely he had a physical ailment, even though the lack of details of this Thorn doesn’t really provide a proper diagnosis. Physical infirmities that fit Paul’s situation here are malaria, Malta fever, epilepsy, convulsive attacks, and chronic ophthalmia.

Ophthalmia means: inflammation of the eye, especially conjunctivitis

Many of the ailments (malaria, Malta fever, epilepsy, convulsive attacks, and chronic ophthalmia, etc.) can also affect eyesight and it is very probable that Paul experienced difficulty with his vision—which was most likely caused by his thorn in the flesh. Since Paul most likely experienced difficulty with his vision, he took advantage of various amanuensis to do the actual writing of some of his epistles.

a man u en sis (uh-man yuh-WEN-sis): one employed to write from dictation or to copy manuscript.

One of the mentions of amanuensis of Paul is Tertius, who wrote down the book of Romans for Paul and added his own greeting to the church in Rome (Romans 16:22)

Romans 16:22 KJV:

22 I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.

At other times, Paul adds a salutation with his own hands
(1 Corinthians 16:21; 2 Thessalonians 3:17 both KJV)

21 The salutation of me Paul with mine own hand.

salutation in 1 Corinthians 16:21 means: greeting

2 Thessalonians 3:17 KJV:

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

salutation in 2 Thessalonians 3:17 means: greeting

token in 2 Thessalonians 3:17 means: sign, symbol

epistle in 2 Thessalonians 3:17 means: letter

Paul was adding a salutation (greeting) with his own hands (1 Corinthians 16:21; 2 Thessalonians 3:17 both KJV) rather than physically writing the entire Pauline epistles. Sometimes Paul even wrote in large print as shown in Galatians 6:11 KJV

Galatians 6:11 KJV:

11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.

More evidences of Paul’s poor vision can be found earlier in his epistle (letter) to the Galatians. Paul tells us that because of his physical infirmity he first preached the gospel to the Galatians (Galatians 4:13 KJV)

Galatians 4:13 KJV:

13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.

Infirmity means: Gk. Weakness

There is some speculation that Paul’s physical infirmitity (weakness) was possibly a disease that affected his eyesight, and so the higher altitude in Galatia might have been better for him because of this disease. This is especially true if the disease was malaria (an intermittent and remittent fever caused by a protozoan parasite that invades the red blood cells. The parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes in many tropical and subtropical regions.)It is only two verses later that Paul states that the Galatian church would have plucked out their own eyes and given them to him if it were possible (Galatians 4:15 KJV)

Galatians 4:15 KJV:

15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

record in Galatians 4:15 means: witness

Question for my readers of this blog: Would you pluck out one or both of your eyes to give to someone else, for a million dollars, a billion dollars, a trillion dollars, or ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD??

Here is another example of Paul’s eyesight, which is found in Acts 23:3-5 KJV:

Acts 23:3-5 KJV:

3 Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

4 And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

5 Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

In Acts 23:4, Revilist thou means: Are you verbally abusing?

In Acts 23:5, I wist means: knew

At this point in Paul’s life, he was in the Sanhedrin and referred to the high priest as a “white-washed wall” (Acts 23:3 above KJV), and because of Paul calling the high priest this name, those who stood by Paul asked why he was insulting the high priest. Paul responded to them by telling them he did not realize Ananias (Acts 23:2 KJV) was the high priest. Because Paul was previously a Pharisee (before he got saved), he would have been able to recognized the high priest quite easily. Because Paul most likely had a vision problem at this point in his life, he probably was unable to identify the high priest (Ananias – Acts 23:2 KJV) even though the high priest would have stood out because he word special garments and accessories. Since Paul was a former Pharisee, for Paul not to have recognized the high priest is most likely explained by Paul was not able to see him properly—which can be explained by theories that Paul had trouble with his vision.

The ambiguity of Paul’s Thorn in the flesh can be looked at as a positive thing. (The quality or state of being ambiguous especially in meaning – i.e. The ambiguity of the poem allows several interpretations).

OR: a word or expression that can be understood in two or more possible way : an ambiguous word or expression

UNCERTAINTY

If Paul would have specifically identified and told us specifically what this Thorn In The Flesh was, believers in the following generations from 2,000 years ago even up until today may have rejected his Thorn in the flesh experience if they were not afflicted with the same affliction. However, Christians from generations going back 2,000 years to the time of Paul up until today (2023) have benefited by him referring to his thorn, applying it to their specific problems. A really good book pointing this out is: “The Expositors Bible Commentary, by Murray J. Harris, Grand Rapids, Zondervan Publishing House, 1976, p. 396. By Paul speaking about his Thorn In The Flesh in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJV, he gives us an understanding of God’s perspective concerning physical infirmities (Weaknesses).

God will sometimes use illnesses for his purposes. Paul experienced many sufferings besides his Thorn in the Flesh in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 KJV. Examples of other sufferings Paul experienced outside of his Thorn In The Flesh are shown in 2 Corinthians 11:22-28:

2 Corinthians 11:22-28 KJV:

22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.

23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

In Verse 28 above, Paul is saying that he had to care for all the churches, for instance: The Ephesus Church, The Smyrna Church, The Pergamos Church, The Thyatira Church, The Sardis Church, The Philadelphia Church, and The Laodicea Church (Revelation Chapters 2 and 3 KJV, plus other churches besides these 7 churches). Yet, despite these other physical infirmities (Weaknesses) God still used him mightily to further the advancement of HIS Gospel.

Just because a Believer has illness or suffering in his or her life doesn’t mean that the Believer is living a sinful life or a life that lacks faith. Paul pleaded with the Lord on three separate occasions for the Lord to remove his Thorn (2 Corinthians 12:8 KJV), and yet God’s grace was enough for the Apostle Paul, and God’s power is made perfect in Paul’s weaknesses.

2 Corinthians 12:8 KJV:

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

Besought means: begged, entreated, implored, asked earnestly

Thrice means: three times

The author of this Blog (Jon Lutz, born in 1958, of Prophecy Alert Today Blog) on Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh (2 Corinthians 12:7-9) can relate. Here are some of this author’s afflictions and diseases in his life:

1. When Jon Lutz was about 3-4 months old, he had a terrible fever for 3-4 days of 103, and he almost died.

When Jon Lutz was about 1 ½ years old, he had a hernia and had to have surgery. This was back in the days when hernia surgery wasn’t an outpatient surgery. He had to stay in Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado for 2-3 days before being discharged to go home.

3. From the ages of 8 to about 15, Jon Lutz had terrible stomach pains and was in Children’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado every 6-12 months, sometimes for 4 to 6 days, for extreme stomach pains; some so bad that he had to have general anesthetic to help him sleep. He would wake up sitting up with his head between his knees. The doctors at Children’s Hospital were going to open up his stomach to see what the problem was, but the pain went away until he was about 58 years old, so about 44 years later.

4. On February 11, 1994, Jon Lutz got t-boned by a semi cab on I-70 near I-25 in Denver, Colorado, on the driver’s side of his car, in a blinding snow storm. The car that Jon Lutz was driving was sliding on this I-70 highway, because he didn’t have snow tires, and it was very, very icy. The driver of the semi got out and tried to pull Jon Lutz out from the driver’s side to the passenger side, but Jon Lutz told him not to do this, because his entire left side (from the neck down to his feet and toes) was numb, and he couldn’t feel anything. So Jon Lutz told the driver of the semi that if he moved Jon Lutz one more inch, Jon Lutz would be paralyzed from the neck down. If the long truck trailer attached to the semi cab would have been attached, Jon Lutz is convinced his car would have been crushed, the cab and the long trailer attached to the semi cab would have run over the top of Jon Lutz’s car.

4A. The driver of the semi cab called 911, and an ambulance arrived within 10-15 minutes of this call. The author of this blog, Jon Lutz, watched the semi cab and saw the driver of the semi cab to make sure he was in the cab until the ambulance arrived. The ambulance removed Jon Lutz from the driver’s side of his car. He was taken to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in West Denver. When Jon Lutz got to this hospital, he asked the attending physicians and nurses if they saw or talked to the gentleman driving the semi cab. They said that they NEVER SAW the driver in the cab when they arrived to take Jon Lutz to the hospital. This reminds me of the Verse in the KJV:

Hebrews 13:2 King James Version:

2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

4B. The Prophecy Alert Today Blog author Jon Lutz broke his left collarbone in three (3) places, and underwent 8-10 weeks of rehabilitation, which was extremely hard and very painful. His chest was yellow, blue, red, etc., almost all colors of the rainbow for these 8-10 weeks. He missed 6 weeks of work because his job required him to type and he couldn’t type with his left hand at all.

5. In about 2017-2018, Jon Lutz started having these really severe stomach pains again. So he went to a Gastroenterologist, and this Gastroenterologist referred him to a General Surgeon. On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Jon Lutz had his stomach cut open from just above his belly button to just under his sternum (about an 8” to 9” cut) under general anesthesia. The surgeon went in to try to remove the lads bands, but they had dissolved, since they dissolve when a person is a teenager to early 20’s. He removed my appendix, and took out my colon and bowels, and removed scar tissue from both, and rearranged my bowels. My bowels (or intestines) are mal-rotated (in other words, the small bowel or intestine is where the large intestine or bowel should be; and the large bowel or intestine is where the small bowel or intestine should be).

5A. So Jon Lutz was sent home on Wednesday, July 24, 2019. He had an infection from being cut open, and on Friday, July 26, 2019, he was back in the hospital. This infection in his stomach made his stomach stick out almost as big as a basketball!! He was back in the hospital from Friday, July 26, 2019 until Thursday, August 1, 2019. He couldn’t poop during this entire 7 days, so on Monday, July 29, 2019, he had to have an NG Tube put up his nose and threaded into his stomach to pump out the bile in his stomach. I WOULDN’T WISH THIS ON ANYONE!!!

6. Another surgery that Jon Lutz, of Prophecy Alert Today had was a Laparoscopic surgery in March 2020, on his stomach. This surgery involves not cutting open the stomach, but, under general anesthesia, making small slits in the stomach and using instruments to go in and remove more scar tissue from the colon, the small bowel or intestine and also the large intestine or bowel, and other parts of the stomach.

7. Also, Jon Lutz has had three (3) back surgeries (2000, 2013, 2015) with laminectomies on L3-L4/L4-L5 left lumbar lower back, and S1. Also, he has had many steroid injections in both sides of lumbar area (left and right lower back), Two RFA’s on lower left and right back (lumbar area), Radio Frequency Ablation, to deaden the nerves, and nerve signals to brain. He has also had trigger point injections in upper back to loosen the tightness of the muscles in his upper back.

7A. The Prophecy Alert Today Blog author has a 33 degree curve in his spine to the left in the middle back (the Thoracic Area).

8. And also, Jon Lutz had laser surgery to repair torn retinas in 1986 and 1993, and also scleral buckles put in both eyes in 1986 and 1993, to repair torn retinas. He also had scleral buckles put in both eyes in 1986 and 1991, to repair the torn retinas in both eyes. He also had Cataracts in both eyes, in June 2010, and had ocular implants put in both eyes in 2010, two (2) weeks apart. Before these ocular implants were put in both his left and right eye in June 2019, his vision in his left eye was 20/400 and his right eye vision was 20/200. As of April 2023, the vision in both eyes is 20/40!! So this is specifically related to Paul’s Thorn In The Flesh most likely being a vision problem

9. On December 27, 2021, Jon Lutz was tested for Covid-19, and the next day, December 28, 2021, he found out he tested positive for Covid-19, so he quarantined for 10 days. On Monday, January 3, 2022, Jon Lutz had terrible pain radiating from his back around to his chest. He dry heaved for about 7-8 hours every 15-20 minutes. Around 6:15 pm to 6:30 pm on January 3, 2022, his wife Cheryl said Jon and she should go to the Urgent Care at Kaiser Permanente Aurora Medical Offices, in Aurora, Colorado, so she drove him over there.

9A. The Lutz’s were at Kaiser Permanente Aurora Centrepoint Medical Offices Urgent Care until about 7:45 pm or 8:00 pm. The Urgent Care doctors and nurses there performed many tests and around 8:00 pm they said that Jon Lutz was trying or even having a heart attack. An ambulance came from the Medical Center of Aurora, a Level 1 Heart Hospital, in Aurora, Colorado, and took Jon there. They performed tests all night on January 3, 2022, and around 9:00 am on January 4, 2022, they took Jon Lutz for cardiac catheterization, with sedation, through his right wrist, and put two (2) stents in the left side of his heart, to keep the arteries from becoming clotted. He was in The Medical Center of Aurora for three (3) days.

9B. He was in ICU (because of Covid-19 positive test), which on January 3, 2022, he found out he had Covid Pneumonia from the previous positive test on December 28, 2021, in his lungs, until January 6, 2022.

9C. In April 2022 (3 months later), Jon Lutz went back to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado, for another heart catheterization, through his left wrist again, under sedation, to just check to see if the stents were still working to allow blood to flow freely through the left side of his heart, and not to clot on this side of his heart. He also had the right side of his heart checked to make sure there was no clotting on that side of his heart. He was in this hospital for three (3) days also.

9D. In June 2022 (2 months later) Jon Lutz was back in the Medical Center of Aurora for three (3) days again, for another heart catheterization, because he was having extreme tightness and pain radiating from his upper back to his chest, to make sure that the stents in his left side were still working to keep his blood from clotting on the left side of his heart; and also if the blood was flowing good on the right side of his heart, to keep the arteries from clotting.
