Note on appearing coming same as Second Coming

1 Corinthians 1:7 — “…waiting for the coming [ἀποκάλυψιν] of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

• 2 Thessalonians 1:7 — “…when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed [ἀποκαλύψει] from heaven with his mighty angels.”

• Revelation 19:11–16 — Christ visibly returning from heaven on a white horse with His armies, in judgment.

Why they’re understood as the same event

1. Same Greek word, same referent. Paul is describing the moment Christ Himself is unveiled — not a hidden or preliminary phase. As BibleTools notes on 1 Cor 1:7: “Paul clearly refers to the return or the second coming of Jesus Christ… His visible appearance… 2 Thessalonians 1:7–10 speaks of that same day.”[bibletools]

2. Both are public, from-heaven, with-angels events. 2 Thess 1:7 explicitly adds “from heaven with his mighty angels… in flaming fire taking vengeance” — matching Matthew 24:30–31, Jude 14–15, and Revelation 19.

3. Both are the believer’s blessed hope. 1 Cor 1:7 has believers “waiting for” it; 2 Thess 1:7 promises them “rest” at it — the same climactic vindication.

4. Peter uses the same word the same way in 1 Peter 1:7, 1:13, and 4:13 — all pointing to the single “revelation of Jesus Christ” that brings glory to His saints.
