It was just after 4 a.m. when the first sirens wailed through the city. We’ve trained for this countless drills, protocols, briefings but nothing prepares you for the sound of ballistic missiles cutting through the air. We heard the impact before we even got the coordinates. Beersheba was hit hard. The force rattled our station, and we were on the move within minutes. When we arrived at the impact zone, the scene was chaos. The air was thick with dust. A residential building had taken a direct hit. Windows were shattered across several blocks, and twisted metal and glass blanketed the street. We had to shout to be heard over the wailing alarms and panicked cries. People were running, many barefoot, clutching only what they could grabbags, blankets, a few stuffed animals. Some still wore pajamas. I couldn't believe my eyes uncontrollable tears dropped but I had to do my work
