Biblical Evidence linking Baal Worship to Child Sacrifice

A Recreated Arch of Palmyra Unveiled in New York City

Key KJV verses linking Baal worship to child sacrifice:
  • Jeremiah 19:5 — "They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind."
  • Jeremiah 32:35 — "And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin."

The Arch of Palmyra, also known as the Monumental Arch or Triumphal Arch, was a Roman-era ornamental archway built in the 3rd century CE during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus in the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria. It served as a ceremonial gateway along the city's Great Colonnade, marking a 30-degree change in the street's direction and connecting the main thoroughfare to the precinct of the Temple of Bel.

The arch was destroyed by ISIS in 2015, along with much of Palmyra's heritage, and replicas have been created for cultural preservation (e.g., displayed in London, New York, and Washington, D.C.).The Temple of Bel (dedicated in 32 CE) was the main religious structure at the end of that processional way, dedicated to the Mesopotamian god Bel (a local form of the Semitic deity often equated with Baal/Ba'al, meaning "lord").

The temple featured a large courtyard with an altar and ramp primarily for animal sacrifices, blending Greco-Roman and Near Eastern architectural styles.Palmyra's religion centered on a triad: Bel, the moon god Aglibol, and the sun god Yarhibol.
