Dear Dr. Rectenwald,

I apologize for the delay in responding to your request to respond to your study “ The Three Newmans: A Triumvirate of Secularity”

Thank you for the opportunity to read and respond to your brilliant work in your analysis of  “The Three Newmans: A Triumvirate of Secularity.” I was honored by the request from you being a prominent PhD to engage with your work.

As I’ve told you earlier, it is extremely dense in knowledge and is not a casual read but rather layers of deep thought deserving time and analysis.  I had to stop several times and literally study the meaning and the nuances.

Please note that my entire foundational doctrine for a TRUE CHRISTIAN is based on the King James Bible, and I have summarized these studies in this Blog:

https://www.thethirdheaventraveler.com/2026/04/powerful-corollary-to-jacobs-name.html

It is on this basis of this Blog that I analyze and respond to your study.

I was especially captivated by the title.  I had no idea exactly what the title meant.  I have included below a fascinating analysis by Super Grok XAI of your title as I made a query using the background of 2 of my primary Blog studies that are related to religion and what is true faith. Please see it in NOTES below.

It is in the very title of your work that the heart of my analysis is revealed: The three Newman brothers serve as the perfect lens through which to see the utter futility of religion.

I believe the heart of the matter is captured powerfully in your own chapter title.  How three brothers from the same family and the same evangelical faith could arrive at such completely opposite conclusions remains one of the most striking examples of religion’s failure. In fact, this is the perfect case study to showcase half of my adult life exposing RELIGION.

This is all about the utter fallacy of RELIGION, the destruction and dead end of RELIGION, and proving that all RELIGION is of and from the little “g” god of  this world — Satan himself.  2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV.

The True Foundation: Pentecost and the Birth of the Church

After the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven 40 days after His resurrection, and then 10 days later on the day of Pentecost (day 50), the true Church — the Body of Christ — was born. This was the pure, Spirit-filled beginning. The apostles walked in the power and doctrine given directly by the risen Christ.

The Lord warned us and all of the apostles warned us as it is written in scripture that the wolves would come.   And sure enough as we witness, that after the last apostle, John, died, the wolves did come. Acts 20:29-30 KJV.

They did. Right on the heels of the apostolic age came the corruption.

As I’ve documented in thorough research in blog links below, we see the influence of pagan philosophy, particularly through Philo of Alexandria, feeding into Tertullian’s early concept of the Trinity in the late 2nd and early 3rd century.

This was later formalized and enforced in the Nicene Creed at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. What began as the simple Gospel of grace through faith in the finished work of Christ was quickly replaced by organized RELIGION — creeds, councils, hierarchies, and man-made doctrines that mixed truth with pagan error.

From that point forward, what the world calls “Christianity” became a corrupted religious system. This is the rotten root that produced the fruit we see in the Newman brothers.

Several times while reading your work I paused in amazement of how painfully obvious this is.

The Newman Brothers:

Living Proof of Religion’s Dead End

Your study is outstanding because it documents exactly what happens when man operates with his carnal mind which is enmity against God and not after Christ.

Romans 8:7

“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.”

King James Version (KJV)

  • John Henry Newman went all the way into Romanism (the full expression of religious corruption).

  • Francis William Newman saw the deadness of creeds and external religion and tried to create his own mystical “primitive Christianity” based on the “soul.” He rejected eternal punishment by twisting the Greek word aionios, dismantled the authority of Scripture through higher criticism, and ended up with a feeling-based religion stripped of doctrine.

  • Charles Robert Newman followed the logic all the way to outright atheism.

You present these three paths as a “triumvirate of secularity.” I see them as a triumvirate of evidence that RELIGION — any and all of it — is a dead-end system originated by the god of this world.

Even Francis Newman’s rejection of creeds and “second-hand faith” is telling. He could feel that something was deeply wrong with the religious system he inherited.

But because he did not return to the pure Gospel given to Paul and preserved in the King James Bible, he wandered into subjectivism and helped pave the way for modern Secularism.

This is the pattern: RELIGION either hardens men into ritual and tradition or drives them into unbelief when they finally see through the system. There is no life in it. There never was after the wolves entered.

My life’s work here is confirmed by your brilliant work Sir.

For half of my adult life I have labored to show that true Christianity is not a religion at all. It is a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ by grace through faith, according to the preserved Word of God in the King James Bible. Everything added after the apostles — the Trinity as later defined, the Nicene Creed, denominational structures, and man-made doctrines — belongs to the religious system of the little “g” god.

Your study on the three Newmans is one of the best modern case studies I have seen. It shows real, educated, sincere men who began in evangelical religion and ended in three different places — all… repeat ALL of them have ended up existing outside the pure faith once delivered unto the saints.

Religion destroys. It either produces cold l traditionalists or drives people into the arms of unbelief. Only the true Gospel — the one preached by Paul and preserved THE FINAL AUTHORITY OF THE KING JAMES BIBLE.

I close this very terrible (in the strict context of ROD from Psalm 23 KJV * see  NOTES) and sobering scripture and the subsequent synopsis and related indepth blog study in link I base my entire foundation to respond to your study:

Genesis 32:28

“And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

King James Version (KJV)

The reason for this name change is ultimately to show the relationship with God (Jesus Christ) and His true people—the church of Philadelphia (the faithful, patient church promised protection and an open door in Revelation 3:7–13), the Jewish remnant (the elect believing Israelites preserved through history and especially in the end times), the tribulation saints (those who endure the great tribulation, washing their robes in the Lamb's blood, Revelation 7:14), and the Old Testament saints (the faithful remnant who looked forward to the Messiah in faith).

This renaming signifies a transformed relationship: from self-reliant striving to prevailing through dependence on God, foreshadowing how true believers in Christ (Jew and Gentile) enter into intimate covenant relationship with Him as God's people.

NOTES:

XAI Analysis of the meaning of Dr. Rectenwald’s title:

The Deep Meaning of “A Triumvirate of Secularity”

When Rectenwald puts these two words together, he is making a sophisticated claim:

The three Newman brothers do not merely illustrate secularity — they embody and enact it as a ruling triad.

In other words:

  • They function as a kind of governing archetype of modern religious possibility.

  • Together, they represent the three major destinations available once traditional Protestant Christianity begins to fracture.

  • They are not random individuals. They are symbolic rulers over the landscape of belief and unbelief in the modern world.

Rectenwald is suggesting that the Newman brothers, as a group, helped define the boundaries of what religious and secular options would look like from the mid-19th century onward. Francis, in particular, becomes the most important figure because he occupies the middle space — neither fully orthodox nor fully atheist — which Rectenwald sees as the purest expression of secularity.

4. Deeper Symbolic and Structural Implications

The phrase carries several layers of meaning:

Layer

Meaning

Implication

Political

Triumvirate = ruling alliance of three

The three brothers collectively “rule” over the possible religious outcomes of modernity

Historical

They mark a turning point

Their lives represent the moment when Protestantism could no longer hold its children within one system

Typological

Three archetypal paths

Rome / Mystical Theism / Atheism as the three major options

Philosophical

Embodiment of the “optative condition”

Secularity is not just an idea — it is personified in these three men

Ironical

A “triumvirate” usually implies unity of purpose

Here the three are radically divided, yet together they define the field

This last point is especially sharp. In classical triumvirates, the three men usually worked together (even if competitively). Here, the three Newmans are divided — yet their very division becomes the new form of power. Their fragmentation itself becomes the ruling structure of modern belief.

5. Critical Analysis from a Biblical Perspective

From the framework you’ve been developing, the phrase “A Triumvirate of Secularity” takes on even darker significance:

  • It reveals how post-apostolic religion eventually produces its own dissolution. Once the wolves entered after the death of the apostle John and pagan-influenced doctrines (such as the formalized Trinity at Nicaea in 325 AD) corrupted the simplicity of the faith, the system became unstable.

  • The three Newman brothers are not just historical figures — they are symptoms of a corrupted religious system. Their divergent paths (Rome, mystical subjectivism, and atheism) are the logical outcomes of operating within a religious structure that had already mixed truth with error.

  • Francis Newman’s attempt to escape creeds while still clinging to a vague “soul” experience shows the futility of trying to reform religion from within. He rejected parts of the corruption but had no anchor in the pure, preserved Word of God.

  • Rectenwald’s celebration of this “triumvirate” as the very expression of secularity actually confirms what you have been exposing for half your adult life: that all religion, once severed from the apostolic foundation and the authority of Scripture, leads to fragmentation, deception, or outright unbelief.

In this light, “A Triumvirate of Secularity” is not a neutral academic observation. It is an unwitting testimony to the spiritual bankruptcy of any system that replaces the simplicity of Christ with man-made religion.

Summary

“A Triumvirate of Secularity” means:The three Newman brothers function as a ruling triad that defines and governs the major religious and secular possibilities of the modern age. Their lives do not merely reflect the breakdown of traditional Christianity — they embody the new condition in which belief itself has become optional, fragmented, and plural. Rectenwald presents them as the archetypal representatives of where Protestantism could go once its foundations were shaken.

Rod and Staff in Psalm 23 KJV A deep study

Rod and Staff in Psalm 23 – A Biblical Word Study

1. ROD

Hebrew Word: Shebet Strong’s Number: H7626 Ancient Hebrew Lexicon (Jeff Benner) Reference: 2748

Core Meaning: To shake, tremble, or quake — often out of fear, anger, or agitation. It carries the idea of shaking in fury, trembling, raging, troubling, or causing disquiet.

Significance in Psalm 23: The “rod” represents authority and protection. In the ancient Hebrew understanding, it is not just a physical tool but something that inspires reverence, awe, and trembling.

It reflects the shepherd’s power to defend the sheep and correct them when necessary.Biblical Connection: This aligns with the concept of fear and trembling before the Lord, as seen in: Psalm 2:11 — “Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.” Philippians 2:12 — “Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”

The rod symbolizes God’s authority that produces a godly fear — not terror, but reverential respect and submission.

Important Truth: This knowledge of having godly terror (reverential fear) in our hearts can only come by knowing and believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior.

Belief is a powerful and essential word. Without having Jesus Christ in our hearts, we cannot bear good fruit. (See the Fruit Inspection Study: https://www.thethirdheaventraveler.com/2025/02/believe.html)

2. STAFF

Hebrew Word: Misheneth Strong’s Number: H4938 Ancient Hebrew Lexicon (Jeff Benner) Reference: 2861

Core Meaning: To lean upon, to support, or to rest upon. It emphasizes stability, bearing weight, and providing aid while walking.Significance in Psalm 23: The “staff” represents gentle guidance, comfort, and support. It is the instrument the shepherd uses to help, direct, and sustain the sheep — especially when they are weak or in need of rest.

Biblical Connection: While the rod speaks of authority and reverence, the staff speaks of leaning on the Shepherd for strength and comfort. It pictures God’s tender care and sustaining grace.

Combined Meaning of Rod and StaffTogether, the rod and staff in Psalm 23 present a complete picture of God’s shepherding care:Instrument Hebrew Meaning Spiritual Picture Function Rod To shake, tremble, quake Authority & Reverence Protection, correction, defense Staff To lean upon, support Comfort & Stability Guidance, rest, and sustaining The rod inspires godly fear and trembling (reverence and respect for God’s authority). The staff provides support and rest (comfort and guidance through leaning on God).

David is saying that both aspects — God’s holy authority and His tender support — bring comfort to the believer.Connection to the Word of GodThe rod and staff also illustrate how God’s Word functions in the life of a believer:Like the rod, the Word of God convicts, corrects, and pierces the heart (Hebrews 4:12). Like the staff, the Word of God supports, instructs, and comforts (2 Timothy 3:16).

Thus, Scripture acts as both a rod (bringing godly fear and correction) and a staff (bringing comfort and guidance).Final Connection: Jesus Christ – The Word Made FleshThe study concludes by connecting both the rod and staff to Jesus Christ:The Spirit of Truth guides believers into all truth (John 16:13) and dwells within them (Romans 8:9).

The Word of God (both rod and staff) works in us through the Spirit. Ultimately, the Word became flesh in Jesus Christ (John 1:14). Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of both the rod and the staff. He is:Our Shepherd who exercises loving authority, and The One we lean upon for support, comfort, and rest. This godly fear and trembling, along with the comfort and support we receive, can only be truly experienced through a genuine belief in Jesus Christ as Savior.

Without Christ dwelling in our hearts, we cannot produce the good fruit that comes from a right relationship with the Shepherd.
