Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) was a 23-year-old American peace activist from Olympia, Washington. She was a student at The Evergreen State College and became involved with the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a Palestinian-led group that organizes nonviolent direct action against the Israeli occupation, including acting as "human shields" to protect Palestinian homes and infrastructure.
In January 2003, during the Second Intifada, Corrie traveled to the Gaza Strip (specifically Rafah, near the Egyptian border). She lived with Palestinian families, documented the situation through emails and diaries (later published and adapted into the play My Name Is Rachel Corrie), and participated in protests. Her writings expressed deep empathy for Palestinian civilians, frustration with U.S. policy, and observations of destroyed olive groves, homes, and daily life under military operations.
The incident occurred on March 16, 2003, in Rafah's As-Salam neighborhood (Philadelphi Corridor). Israeli forces were using armored Caterpillar D9 bulldozers for operations in the area. Israel stated these were security measures to destroy smuggling tunnels used by militants and clear vegetation/rubble from previously demolished structures (no new homes were being demolished that day, per their account). Critics and human rights groups argued many demolitions constituted collective punishment or excessive destruction of civilian property, displacing thousands.
Corrie and seven other international ISM activists (Americans and Britons) confronted the bulldozers for hours, wearing bright orange fluorescent vests and using a megaphone to make themselves visible. Late in the afternoon, Corrie stood (and later knelt or slipped) on a mound of dirt in front of one bulldozer to block it from advancing toward a Palestinian home (that of pharmacist Samir Nasrallah).
Activists' account (including multiple eyewitnesses and photos taken that day): Corrie was clearly visible. The bulldozer (operated at a fast walking pace) continued forward, ran over her (dragging her under the blade), and some reports say it reversed over her. She was crushed under dirt and rubble, suffered severe injuries, and was declared dead at a hospital shortly after.

The operator did not see or hear Corrie. She had entered a "combat zone" and put herself in danger by not moving away.
