How to deal with a Dispute among the Brethren BIBLICALLY
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”
The verse lists four distinct functions of Scripture, presented in a logical progression:
DOCTRINE is the FOUNDATION:

- Doctrine – positively teaching what is right DOCTRINE from the KJV
- Reproof – exposing what is wrong.
- Correction – showing how to make it right.
- Instruction in righteousness – training how to stay right and grow in holiness.
- Reproof (Greek: elegmos)
This is the act of convicting, rebuking, or exposing sin and error. It points out where a person has gone wrong, bringing conviction to the conscience. Reproof identifies the fault and demonstrates that something is contrary to God’s standard. It is primarily negative in focus—it reveals the problem but does not yet provide the solution. - Correction (Greek: epanorthōsis)
This is the act of straightening up what has been shown to be wrong. It provides the positive remedy or restoration—showing the right path and how to return to it. Correction builds on reproof by giving the practical guidance or discipline needed to amend the error and align with God’s will.
- Reproof says: “You are wrong here; this is sin/error.”
- Correction says: “Here is how to get right; this is the way to restore and reform.”

1. Doubtful Disputations. Romans 14:1 KJB Don't get tangled in this. Background Case:
MAJOR CLARIFICATION is needed here for the Body of Christ regarding disputes among the Brethren. (Brothers and Sisters in Christ...
Many times in my experience people misunderstand Matthew 18 as the necessary steps to "always" follow when encountering a dispute between the brethren.
However, again we must correctly apply scripture - ALL scripture and NOT Cherry pick. Here is the clarification:
Galatians 2:11-14, Paul publicly confronts Peter in Antioch for hypocrisy: Peter fellowshipped with Gentiles until Jewish visitors arrived, then withdrew, fearing criticism and implying Gentiles must Judaize for acceptance.
