Case Study on The Ahaziah Age Trap

1 Peter 3:15

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”

King James Version (KJV)

This morning I received the following question on my Quora account:

This is a perfect case study of how the enemy tricks the feeble minded and those carnal Christians who do not read their King James Bible.

How was Ahaziah both 22 and 42 years old when he began to rule over Jerusalem according to 2 Kings 8:26 and 2 Chronicles 22:2?

SEE MY RESPONSE BELOW this confusion here of conventional wisdom found online>   Also note that my King James study bible reference says quote: SCHOLARS AGREE THAT IT SEEMS LIKELY THE COPYEDITING ERROR IS HERE IN 2 CHRONICLES. THIS MINOR DISCREPANCY IS OFTEN CITED AS EVIDENCE THAT THE BIBLE, ESPECIALLY THE OLD TESTAMENT IS UNRELIABLE...(FOLLOWED BY BLAH BLAH BLAH about Dead Sea Scrolls and other manuscripts etc.  Doctrine of DEMONS

The apparent discrepancy in Ahaziah’s age when he began to rule, as mentioned in 2 Kings 8:26 (22 years old) and 2 Chronicles 22:2 (42 years old), has been a topic of discussion among scholars. Here are the main explanations:

  1. Copyist Error: Many scholars believe that the age of 42 in 2 Chronicles 22:2 is a copyist error. The original Hebrew manuscripts might have had a numerical mistake, as the numbers 22 and 42 are similar in Hebrew notation12.

  2. Dynastic Reference: Another explanation is that the age of 42 refers not to Ahaziah’s personal age but to the duration of the dynasty of Omri, from which Ahaziah descended through his mother Athaliah2. This would mean that 42 years had passed since the beginning of Omri’s reign.

  3. Contextual Interpretation: Some suggest that the age of 42 could be symbolic or refer to a different context, such as the age of his mother or another relative1.

These explanations help reconcile the apparent contradiction, showing that the Bible’s historical and textual context can provide clarity.

My Response:

This is an old worn-out trap question to attempt to say the Old Testament is full of copyist errors. It’s quite humorous. But if one goes into the actual King James Bible and opens it and reads it, one discovers the “extreme” difference in context.

Let's Examine:

2 Kings 8:26 is the age Ahaziah assumed rule - 22 years. 2 Chronicles 22:2 is referring to the OMRI dynasty through his mother Athaliah which would have been 42 years WHEN Ahaziah began to reign which was one year.

The key is carefully reading 2 Chronicles 22 verse one, especially the last sentence that precedes verse 2. (Reign of the Omri dynasty - Omri 6 years, Ahab 22 years, Ahaziah 2 years, Joram (Jehoram) 12 years = 42 years.

Thank you.

His Response:

You played the old switcheroo apologetic like in this example below

Christians arbitrarily transform the text to conform to their beliefs, this is called eisegesis, they are so familiar with this trickery they often don’t know they are doing it.

Christians magically “transform” a particular verse with a “Textual Switcheroo Bible Fiddle”, which works as follows.

“Textual Switcheroo Bible Fiddle”

Problematic Bible Text

… and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” Matthew 19:12
take any problematic words you don’t happen to like and substitute them with words you happen to like better.
Weaker Christians typically are offended at Jesus saying it is acceptable, though not mandatory, to self mutilate your genitalia “for the kingdom”

Sanitised Bible Text

… and there be CELIBATES, which have made themselves CELIBATES for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” - Matthew 19:12 (TEXT FIDDLED AND SANITISED)
falsely equivocate the original EUNUCH meaning “permanent removal of testes” with the substitute CELIBATE meaning “temporary abstinence from sex”

Jesus was not particularly inspired by the Holy Spirit on the day he said its acceptable to cut your nuts off for Him, modern Christians know better than Jesus and can rework what He said into something else He didn’t say but really should have said.

Good try with your SMOKE and MIRROR parlor trick. No, I spoke clearly with few words. I pray you repent!

When to respond and how to respond to a mocker or scorner

I’ve learned to respond with King James Bible Scripture. Remember, the WORD of God is sharper than any 2-edged sword and is powerful. Jesus responded to the attacks from the Devil with scripture. For a ridiculous mocking rhetorical question trying to trap or embarrass me I use:

Titus 3:9 KJV: But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

To address bullies in theological criticism while sowing false doctrine, I rebuke them sharply armed with these scriptures that declare:

You need to be REBUKED. The Reason you are doing what you’re doing is because the devil has blinded your mind, you are not a child of God and you need to repent.

Titus 1:13 KJV

“This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;”

2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

John 8:42–47 KJV, John 10:25–28 KJV Acts 3:9 KJV.
