#ISON Alert, 1 October 2013 5:17 -7 GMT
It is October 1st, and it is 5:17 a.m. (CST...Missouri time) for those who are up this morning. Still plenty dark. ISONis visible in the southeastern sky about 30 to 40 degrees above the horizon. It is red. It doesn't look like a comet, but more like the winged photo that some astronomers have been showing, and as you watch it, it appears like sparks orflares are shooting off from it. Binoculars will be helpful, but I am describing what can be seen with the naked eye. You might think it is an airplane when you first spot it, but it does not appear to be moving, but rather staying in one spot in the sky.
